The North built factories and cities. The South built plantations worked by enslaved people. For forty years leaders tried to hold the two together with compromises — and then stopped being able to. This unit follows that split from the first canal to the last surrender.
By the End of This Unit, You Should Be Able To…
- I can explain how inventions and factory systems in the North caused cities to grow and led to new ideas and political changes.
- I can explain how the South's farming economy, which depended on enslaved labor, influenced its political beliefs and values.
- I can explain how differences in geography between the North and South led to different ways of life, which caused political and economic conflicts that led to the Civil War.
- I can describe the lives of enslaved people prior to the Civil War.
- I can explain how the question of slavery in new territories and states led to increased sectional tensions and failed compromises.
